Dido and Aeneas and a new Prologue
Premiere on the 1st of May, 2021 at Muziekgebouw
IJ-Salon "When I am laid in earth." Who isn't familiar with Dido's gorgeous lament? Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas tells the story of Queen Dido and her love for the hero Aeneas. Witches' spells separate her from him and die of heartbreak - but not until she has sung her beautiful song. A musical party with the young singers of the National Women's Choir. Michael Gieler, artistic director of Music Stages: "We wanted to connect the past and the present with our Dido. Our version refers to the premiere of the opera in an English girls' school. At the same time, a newly written prologue by poet Julia Beth Harris and composer Meriç Artaç places the act firmly in the present. This creates a modern story about the tension between power and impotence, between a sense of duty and passion."
